Children and Emotions, Part 1

For many of us, it’s the season of gift-giving. This week I invite you to give your children a truly beautiful gift: their emotions.

Too often, we’re taught to swallow our feelings, and that, if we’re feeling negative emotions such as shame and disappointment, we’re doing something wrong.

Adults struggle with accepting their emotions rather than seeing them as something to be “fixed” — children do too! But hiding or avoiding feelings can lead children to find comfort another way; through playing video games, diving into social channels, eating comfort foods, and even more self-destructive behavior when they get older.

In this episode and the next, I talk about how to help children identify their emotions, feel them fully, and move forward with confidence.
